Lewis University Hosts Nurses White Coat Ceremony that Champions Compassionate Care

Published: October 9, 2017.

More than 70 junior nursing students were “coated” by their senior peers at Lewis University’s College of Nursing and Health Professions’ White Coat Ceremony September 29 at St. Charles Borromeo Convocation Hall on the Romeoville campus.

The event was partially funded by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, a collaborative effort to reach nursing students early in their programs with the message that compassion matters.

In nursing, a White Coat Ceremony traditionally marks the student’s transition from preclinical toward professional practice. Students also are given a specially designed pin that serves as a visual reminder of the continuous bond of trust, respect and communication that connects healthcare professionals with their patients.

“Our College’s heritage was built on concern for the individual – those who we teach and those who they will serve as healthcare professionals,” explained Dr. Peggy Rice, Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Professions. “Our mission is to provide quality educational opportunities to a diverse student population who will then go out and make a positive impact on the world.”

Lewis University’s College of Nursing and Health Professions’ baccalaureate and graduate degree programs in nursing are fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education for the 10-year maximum term. The baccalaureate degree nursing program is approved as a Professional Nursing Education Program by the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation. It is also recognized as the only Partnership in Nursing Excellence program in the State of Illinois by the U.S. Army ROTC.

Lewis University is an innovative and entrepreneurial Catholic university offering market-relevant undergraduate and graduate programs to 6,500 students.
